Taboo Tattoo
Justification on modification
Tattoo taboo

We have chosen to produce a documentary highlighting the prejudices made against body modification, including controversial choices such as tattoos and piercings. We will study the link between whether body modification negatively effects day to day life and employment rates. To highlight both the disadvantages and advantages of body modifications, we will produce a balanced argument in Bill Nichols expository mode style.

During research of previous body modification documentaries, we found a range of different styles.
We found four documentaries which included:
My Tattoo Addiction - Channel 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xzCXI56djU)
Bodyshockers - Channel 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enyNbjgRZ1I)
Modify - Documentary film (USA) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLcLJdrWm84)
Taboo - Nation Geographic Channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75glwgfrl5I)

From watching a range of different styles of documentaries we have found a consistent use of similar conventions, of which each follow. The documentaries however are all different, so each giving u inspiration s a different aspect into how to produce our documentary.

We found in the research we made the typical codes and conventions of the documentary genre which is inspiring our choices of how to film, and what to film in our documentary.

For example, In Bodyshockers, the audience was UK based young adults, for people considering tattoos. This has influenced our decision to interview a range of young adults who may be reluctant as whether to get tattoos or not. In this programme, those who have vast experience with tattoos, mostly regretful, negative experience,  are interviewed which is interesting and appropriate for the against body modification argument. Opinions are draw across on tattoos and piercings through voxpops which highlights the day to day struggles of having regretful tattoos. We will therefore produce voxpops with the public who already have gotten tattoos.

Another documentary we have took influence from is My Tattoo Addiction which instead takes a comedic approach, using upbeat music to produce a humorous effect. The audience for this documentary is more for adults than young adults, and includes much background footage of tattoo shops, tattoos, and people with piercings, which we have been inspired by. This documentary, in an observational mode style, followed a real life case study, documenting a man's excessive tattoos. We have chosen not to follow this style, as we wish to include a range of different people in our documentary instead of focusing on one main character, which is the style of many documentaries we have seen including Supersize me.

The documentary Taboo shows a completely different aspect. It incorporates an educational look at tattoos, providing the audience with a reconstructed drama of the history of tattoos.
